Toa Leadership

Mauri ora!

About Toa Leadership

Te Rūnanga o Toa Rangatira has established the Ngāti Toa Leadership Hub to accelerate the Iwi’s leadership capacity and capability, based on Ngāti Toa values, ideology, and leadership knowledge.

We want to see our people in Leadership roles across the board. Here within our own Iwi organisations, Public Sector, Private Sector, small or large businesses, and most importantly on our marae. Those currently in leadership, management and governance positions are acutely aware of the need to create a roadmap to identify, provide for, and train future leaders within the Iwi.

The Ngāti Toa Leadership Hub provides a series of fortnightly leadership seminars, workshops, course's, conferences and other related activities.

Historically, Ngati Toa’s leaders relied on building strategic relationships with key allies in warfare and for trade purposes to ensure the safety, security and prosperity of the iwi. Today, more so than ever, Ngati Toa is well placed to continue collaborating with others to provide the underpinning knowledge, capability and leadership for its ongoing growth. Effective Ngati Toa leadership will grow the impact of the Iwi in wider society by being able to influence leaders and grow stakeholder engagements.

With the growth in Rūnanga personnel, and Iwi professionals, business-people, and others, there is exposure to competition and the need for a well-qualified workforce and high calibre Iwi leadership and governance. Leadership development is a crucial component for Ngāti Toa people to realise their aspirations and full potential. Professional development is the mechanism to achieve this objective.

The Ngati Toa Leadership Hub will lead and co-ordinate the Iwi’s leadership capacity and capability. Connecting with the Iwi’s dispersed population will guide the design of its leadership programmes.

We will work together (whanaungatanga) to help one another (manaakitanga) advance to higher levels of motivation, performance and leadership (rangatiratanga) by: inspiring a shared vision; attending to everyone’s needs as coaches and mentors; challenging the status quo by stimulating creativity and innovation; and role modelling the right behaviours and attitudes.

Leadership Workshops

Leadership Workshops for leaders who wish to gain further knowledge of what Ngāti Toa leadership looks like, including other leadership skills such as change management, leadership vs management, cultural competency, strategic planning, and time and human resource management.

Leadership Seminars

Leadership Seminars will be held fortnightly from 12noon-1.00pm, commencing Wednesday, 3 August 2022. A presenter (preferably, but not limited to Ngāti Toa) is selected to deliver a 40 minute presentation on their work, or area of interest. These Seminars are interactive and designed to encourage dialogue and conversation, disseminate information and obtain feedback, develop presentation skills, promote collaboration, and profile important work. We aim to have these sessions recorded or live-streamed in the future to make them available to all Ngāti Toa.

Leadership Development Course

Leadership Development Courses that focus on emerging, experienced, and women leaders, featuring guest speakers, group sessions, panel discussions and site visits on relevant topics relating to Iwi leadership, the economy, people and the environment, social-cultural relationships, Government relations, and global perspectives.

For example: In 2022, three Te Ara Whanake Ake wānanga are planned being a collaboration between Downer, Ngāti Toa and Te Puni Kōkiri working together to develop Māori leaders that will help shape the future of Aotearoa.
